How To Host Thanksgiving In A Small Space
Thanksgiving is so close, you can almost smell the gravy and mashed potatoes. Maybe this year is your year to host Thanksgiving dinner with your family and friends, but you’re worried you won’t be able to fit everyone in your condo.
We want to tell you that you can host a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner no matter the size of your home. Below we’ve shared some tips and tricks so you can host the ideal Thanksgiving dinner.
Commit To Hosting
Before anything else, the first thing you should do is commit to hosting Thanksgiving. Don’t get cold feet and keep changing your mind for fear your guests won’t be comfortable. Thanksgiving is about being thankful for what you have and that includes amazing friends and family. Take the plunge and decide this year is your year.
Rearrange Furniture Or Remove Things For The Day
Even if you love how your home is set up, in order to make all your guests fit comfortably, you may have to rearrange your furniture for the day. Put tables, chairs, and other furniture you won’t be using in the corners, another room, or if that won’t fit, in your storage space. Remember it’s only for one day.
Don’t Fill The Table With Decorations
As beautiful as those Thanksgiving centrepieces and decorations look, when your table is full of people, too many things will get in the way. Keep a few things on the table, perhaps a few candles or your smallest decorations, and be sure to keep them in the middle where moving elbows won’t accidentally knock them over.
If You Need Extra Tables Or Chairs, Ask Your Guests
If you’re used to small space living, you probably won’t have an abundance of chairs and tables. Don’t let this scare you from hosting Thanksgiving dinner. Ask your friends or family to pitch in and bring a few tables or chairs. They’ll most likely be more than happy to help with something so simple and you’ll be happy you won’t have to buy a few more things.
Separate Where You Put Your Food
If you have a small dining room table, don’t feel pressured to fill it up with every food item you’re serving. Use end tables, coffee tables, and any other tables you have in your condo to display food. Keep appetizers on one table, drinks on another, side dishes on one, condiments on another, and a few key dishes on your main dining table.
This will give your guests more room to eat while still keeping your Thanksgiving dinner organized.
Use A Coffee Table And Pillows On The Floor
If you’ll be having more people than you truly think your home cannot comfortably fit, invite your guests to sit “seiza-style” (on the floor with your legs crossed) and avoid using chairs completely to save precious elbow space. Use a low table and pillows to make your guests as comfortable as possible, and enjoy the most relaxing Thanksgiving dinner you’ll ever host.
Put Coats And Purses In Your Bedroom
There’s no need to take up walking or sitting space with dozens of coats, purses, and shoes. Clean your bedrooms and have guests put their belongings in there so you can keep the entrance, kitchen, and living and dining rooms free from these things.
If You Have A Small Kitchen, Ask Your Guests To Bring A Side Dish And Worry About The Turkey
As much as you want to do everything, sometimes one kitchen just won’t let you. Having one oven means you can only cook one or two things at a time, which means by the time the turkey is ready, everything else will be cold.
Instead of your guests bringing a small gift or a bottle of wine, ask each person to bring a small side dish or dessert. This will allow your guests to make one of their specialties, while you can focus on the turkey.
Accept It Won’t Be Absolutely Perfect, But The People You’re With Make It Special
Thanksgiving dinners are never 100% perfect, but that’s what makes them so special. Wine will spill, someone will drop gravy on their shirt, and the kids will be loud, but this is all part of the fun of spending time with loved one during the holiday.
